Amid the lockdown, Indians have turned to social media to pass their time. In the first week of lockdown, Indians spent more than four hours every day on social media. This is an 87 percent increase from a week before lockdown.
Before the lockdown, social media usage was on average 150 minutes per day. However, in the first week of lockdown, the figures jumped to 280 minutes per day, showed a survey. The survey added that 75 percent of people were spending more time on Facebook, Twitter, TikTok and WhatsApp compared to the week before. In social media, people were largely consuming news and communicating with their friends and families as coronavirus grappled the country.
Everything in this world has two sides – Bright and Dark. Bane comes with boon and vice versa. It depends upon the taker on which side he wishes to take. The Internet is one of the most wonderful inventions of this modern era. No one can be imagined without the use of the internet. There is no gainsaying that it has become an integral part of our busy life.
Online Business, Online Banking, paying online bills, Online Bookings, chatting with our friends on Social Networks are some of the gifts on the Internet. But this boon has brought some disadvantages in its wake. There are many disadvantages of the Internet if not used properly.
The Internet has become the main instrument in spreading venom in society. Now it has become a fashion to share views on Social Websites such as Facebook, WhatsApp, Twitter, etc. But some people use these platforms for spreading hatred, especially communal hatred. Fake news, without any credibility just to get popularity. Messages spread like the fire of the jungle. Any news posted on it becomes viral immediately and the whole country falls in its grip. Due to this, many unwarranted incidents took place in the past and caused disharmony in our society.
Internet is the only source of interaction, work, study and recreation in this epidemic. Today the internet is serving almost every necessary aspect of carrying on better with life, but even though the obscene material is available every time on the internet. Everybody can have easy access to that any time. The concern grows when children are found viewing such vulgar things as today each one is spending maximum time on the internet today. There are many porn websites causing moral bankruptcy in society. The cases of domestic violence, molestation, etc are the outcome of this immorality, which is at peak. The possible reason could be intolerance and frustration going on while been stuck at home during the quarantine.
Each one of us today is spending much time sitting using the internet. People are engaged in downloading Videos, Games and watching and playing them. Virtual games make them involve, movies catch their attention and WhatsApp and other social sites keep them busy most of the time.
Today as almost each business sector is suffering from distress, on the other hand, various online businesses and sites are flourishing and doing well alone in the current scenario. Sites like zoom and skype are getting widely spread for online lessons, web series are getting more popular, online shopping, smart work mode, interactions almost everything is getting into the smart mode. The entire work process is getting digital, involving each one in every corner of the world.
But people must know how to use things properly for their benefits. The Internet is a great gift. It is like magic doing every work in minutes and seconds for us. Don’t misuse it and make it a bane.
