Chandigarh January 17, 2020: Department of Science & Technology (DST), has sanctioned the grant under Improvement of Science & Technology (FIST) Infrastructure Programme to Panjab
University, Chandigarh.
Prof. Savita Gupta, Chairperson, UIET informed that an amount of Rs. 3 crore under the said scheme has been sanctioned to the Mechanical Engineering Department of UIET, Panjab University under Level-1 for a period of 5 years for the first time for setting up a state-of-the-art Centre for Biomechanical Engineering and Medical Devices.
Mechanical Engineering department is among the 16 engineering institutes selected out of a total of 228 applications across India. The proposal went through a rigorous screening and selection process over a period of 6 months. The core team from the department who conceived and presented this proposal comprised of Dr. Prashant Jindal,
Dr. Rajesh Kumar, Dr. Amit Thakur, Prof. Manu Sharma, Prof. A.P. Singh and Dr. Amit Chauhan.
This project will benefit the institute and University immensely with up-gradation of infrastructure and facilities related to high-end manufacturing, software modeling and material designing. Undergraduate, postgraduate students and research scholars across different engineering disciplines will be using these facilities for upgrading their employability skills and will be encouraged to initiate start-ups in this novel area. This will enable highly skilled human resource generation across the region. Nearby hospitals and manufacturing industry will collaborate with
the department for designing and manufacturing of implants for serving cost-effective reconstruction medical solutions to the society. New design courses and PG programs in collaboration with academia, hospitals and industry will also be introduced.
The multi-axis milling machine will be installed for enhancing the existing biomedical engineering infrastructure of the department that has previously been supported by MHRD under the Design Innovation Centre project. Using medical-grade metal material, biomedical implants for the skull, facial, knee, hip and elbow reconstruction
surgeries would be designed, manufactured and supplied to hospitals to enable cost-effective treatments for needy patients.
International workshops would be organized for resource mobilization and capacity building. With due progress under this scheme, a self-sustaining resource generation setup would also be established Similarly, Department of Botany has been granted the amount of Rs. 80 lacs for the duration of 5 years, under the said scheme to strengthen the research facilities in the Department and post-graduate teachings, informed Prof. Daizy Rani Batish, Chairperson of the Department. She further informed me that the funds will be used for the improvement of
infrastructure and the purchase of new and advanced equipments for research labs. This will
help in Post Graduate Teachings.
Prof. Gurmeet Kaur Bakshi, Chairperson, Department of Mathematics, also received a grant of Rs. 87 Lakhs for 5 years duration to strengthen the research facilities in the Department. An amount of Rs. 50 Lakhs will be spent on Equipment and Networking for the labs and Rs. 30 Lakhs for Library Books/Journals and Rs. 7 Lakhs for the Maintenance.
