 DEPUTY CHIEF MINISTER VISITS HERITAGE SITE- A MONUMENT OF LODI PERIOD BAWLI (STEPWELL) AT DWARKA, RESTORED BY ARCHAEOLOGICAL DEPARTMENT OF DELHI GOVT.

·        DELHI GOVERNMENT RESTORED 52 KNOWN AND LESSER KNOWN MONUMENTS

New Delhi,September 19,2018 ( By SK.Vyas ) : The Deputy Chief Minister, Govt. of NCT of Delhi, Sh Manish Sisodia today visited a heritage site in Dwarka in West Delhi, restored and maintained by Delhi Government’s Department of Archaeology. The above said heritage site – the monument is a Lodi period bawli (stepwell) that went into restoration in an recognizable state two years ago is now ready for site seeing.

Department of Archaeology, Government of N.C.T of Delhi has been undertaking work of conservation and preservation of monuments in a phased manner. Department is doing conservation of about 16 to 18 monuments every year. In the process a Pathan period Baoli has also been unearthed in Sector 12, Dwarka, which earlier was buried in earth. This 52’ feet long and 16’6” wide unearthed Baoli is has 22 flight of stairs leading to bottom most part of well adjoining it. Baoli is now provided with stone masonry plinth protection all around to save it from further damage and surrounded with M.S grilled stone masonry boundary wall. Security guard has also been posted to safeguard it and a description board has been installed on site showing history of Baoli and its drawings for the information of general public visiting the Baoli. It is located in Pocket 1, Sector 12 of dwarka – subcity of Delhi.

Congratulating his team of the Deptt. of Archaeology lead by Shri Maloo, Shri  Sisodia said “I congratulate my team of Archaeology Deptt, who have done a remarkable job in restoring the heritage stepwell. I now urge the people of Delhi to visit this and other such historical structures to experience Delhi’s amazing history and heritage. Places like this Baoli have a tranquil aura. It’s intriguing to be at the spot once inhibited the people of Lodi Era!

While interacting with local residents, Shri Sisodia pointed the need for community engagement and ownership in preserving and using such historical sites.

The Department of Archaeology under the Delhi government manages and restored 52 known and lesser known monuments.

Sisodia announced that he will visit a number of restored and known monuments out of these 52 monuments this month.

He also informed that the Restoration work is on at other monuments such as Tomb(Jharokha), Horse Stable, Tomb in Mehrauli Archaeological Park, Qulikhan’s Tomb & Jharna monuments are also being conserved by Deptt. of archaeology. Similarly, 18 monuments have been conserved last year while 19 more are being

restored this year,  Sisodia informed.
