Kanji (Kapurthala), July 24,: Announcing a complete facelift of the Kanjli wetland, the Irrigation and Power Minister, Punjab Rana Gurjit Singh today said that the entire work of cleaning holy Kali Bein and rejuvenating this tourist spot would be completed within coming six months.
Addressing the gathering during his visit to the tourist spot here today, the Cabinet Minister said that this place would be developed as an ideal tourist destination. He said that nearly three kilometers long pathway along with the holy Kali Bein from Gau Ghat to Kanjli wetland would be beautifully constructed. Rana Gurjit Singh said that elaborate security arrangement would be made by installing CCTV cameras, spiral barbed wires and deployment of the Police force so that people coming for a walk especially the women could walk freely without any fear in morning and evening.
The Cabinet Minister also said that the entire pathway would be lined with trees and flowers to give a beautiful look to it. He also said that five-acre forest land along with Bein would also be developed as a botanical garden to facilitate the people. Rana Gurjit Singh said that every effort would be made give this place a clean, green and environmentally friendly look.
Dwelling on another point the Cabinet Minister announced that a conveyor belt would be installed at barrage in Kanji to weed out water hyacinth and other plants in Bein. He said that the water in this Holy Bein would be cleaned to rejuvenate this water source of immense religious importance. Rana Gurjit Singh also announced that two new bridges would be constructed over the Bein to enable the public to walk on them and enjoy the beauty of wetland.
The Minister said that a proper mechanism would be evolved for ensuring regular cleaning of the Begin by introducing new equipment. He also announced to explore the feasibility of introducing water sports and construction of cycling track in the later stage. Rana Gurjit Singh also formed a committee of the eminent personalities of the city to monitor the work on this project.
It may be recalled that during previous Congress government in the state from 2002-2007 a project was initiated to develop the wetland as an ideal tourist destination. However, the project was lying in limbo during the rule of SAD-BJP alliance government in the state for ten years.
The Minister was accompanied by former MLA Mrs. Rajbhans Kaur Rana, President of Municipal Committee Mrs. Amritpal Kaur and Sub Divisional Magistrate Dr. Nayan Bhullar.
