CBI arrests two persons impersonating as CBI officers demanding bribe

New Delhi, January 18.2020: The Central Bureau of Investigation has arrested two private persons on the allegations of demanding bribe on behalf of CBI officers.

A case was registered on 16.01.2020 on information against two private persons resident of  Hyderabad & Madurai and unknown others under Sections 120-B  read with Section 420, 419 IPC, Section 7A of PC Act, 1988 [as amended in 2018] and section 66D of IT Act, 2000.

It was alleged that both the accused and a few others were threatening and demanding huge amounts as bribes from various individuals who are facing cases with Central Law Enforcement Agencies.   In this connection, they have contacted one of the accused in a CBI case pertaining to a Bank fraud and demanded a huge amount of money in the name of senior CBI officials posted at New Delhi.

It was further alleged both the persons had used a malicious software to spoof the landline telephone number 011-24302700 of CBI which is installed at CBI Head Office, New Delhi and made multiple calls to said accused in bank fraud case in CBI on his mobile number posing themselves as senior CBI officers from New Delhi and demanded bribe for getting favors in the bank fraud case registered by CBI.

It was also alleged that on 04.01.2020, one of the persons (resident of Hyderabad) has gone to Guntur and met the said accused in CBI case and demanded a bribe in the name of senior CBI officers, and threatened with dire consequences if the demanded bribe amount is not handed over within two days.

Searches have been conducted at five places, two in Chennai, one each at Hyderabad, Madurai and Sivakasi which led to the recovery of several mobile phones, various incriminating Whatsapp communications and incriminating documents

The arrested accused are being produced before the Competent Court.  The investigation is continuing.
