Virtual classroom

Boon or a curse

A virtual classroom -a digital replica of a traditional classroom. The teacher-students face to face interactions on the internet.

Of course, when our kids heard this term for the first time, they were surprised and furious. “What! this CORONA thing is no good to us” came to their mind. With mothers getting after their children’s life to work on every possible instruction given by the teacher before classes could actually come in action.

Schools putting in a lot of effort and forcing teachers to come out of their comfort zone of “not knowing” computers, and transformed them into techie maniacs. The computer teacher had a tough time in planning and execution.

With a week-long effort by the school authorities, comp teachers and other technicians, the actual classes begin.

Me too woke up my son early enough so that he takes bath, has his breakfast and then starts studying ( like he’s actually going to school!!). I was curious like any other and wanted to witness this “never seen” event. Many others like me were seen in the screen standing behind their kids thinking they aren’t visible.

The class was supposed to start at 8:30 am, and we both were sitting in front of screen at 8:25 sharp ( didn’t want to miss the opening ceremony). The teacher appeared in the screen, kids were overjoyed to see her and everyone started wishing “good morning ma’am”, I wonder, the tune hasn’t changed over the years. Everything was going smoothly till after 10 minutes kids find out the chat section, where they were discussing their PUBG game levels( being an unaware teacher can actually see that). One of them switched on the mic and connected it to some weird Punjabi songs. Oh! it was full of chaos.

Class somehow ended in 35 minutes with a lot of complaints by parents, teachers and a few dedicated students, though others had a lot of fun.

The next class came with a lot of instructions and guidelines, ultimately there was an improvement.

But question is- Is it healthy for kids to see the screen for such a long duration? Well, in this case ‘half a loaf is better than none’. Virtual learning is opted these days due to the shutdown of schools and is doing a good job in satisfying our needs for the time, though it has its own downside.

At least this generation is learning that nothing can stop the life completely. One has to perform their duties irrespective of the situation and hard work has no limits.

In the end, I’ll use these quotes by a famous writer.

“From the sadness, learn something; from happiness, learn something. From the setback, learn something and even from the success learn something. Never stop learning from any situation in life, for that is where the wisdom lies.”
