Row over Nanak Shah Fakir movie: Bhai Mardana Society demands clearance from Sikh Censor Board

Ferozepur, May 29, 2018: (Vikramaditya Sharma):  Bhai Mardana Yadgari Kirtan Darbar Society in a letter to Sikh Censor Board – SCB, has demanded to ban the release of Nanak Shah Fakir movie based on the life of Guru Nanak Dev till the clearance from the SCB set up by Akal Takht.

Supreme Court has cleared the release of controversial Punjabi film Nanak Shah Fakir, citing the nod from the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) and artistic freedom as the reasons. The film is likely to be released nationwide on 13 April.

On the other hand, the Punjab Government has taken a U-turn on the release of the film when the filmmakers had submitted before the Supreme Court that they would not release the movie in Punjab in view of the sensitivity of the issue and on intervention was required from the state government.  However, the state government would review the situation and take an appropriate decision if the same becomes necessary in the future.

Harpal Bhullar, President, Sarabjit Singh Chabbara, Secretary of the society said, the addicted and unscrupulous characters have been shown as doing the role of respectable personalities as the father Mehta Kalu of Guru Nanak Dev, mother Tripta, Bebe Nanki, Bhai Mardana, Rai Bular Bhatti, Bhai Lalo etc which is condemnable.

They said, in case such culture is not stopped, then in the coming days, people will make it a profession in the film industry by doing the roles of guru and his family members.

Bhullar and Chhabra have demanded that every film based on Sikh religion should be ensured to first have the consent of the Sikh Censor Board.

It is pertinent to mention, former SGPC President Kirpal Singh Badungar said, during my tenure from 2001 to 2003 a resolution was passed that no one will be allowed to play the characters of 10 Sikh gurus, their parents, their wives and children by real life actress in movies.
