“Goal,” my 9-year-old son, Rohan screamed in joy as he kicked the football. It was his dream to become a footballer. “Mumma, I will make you proud,” he’d tell me.
However, now, all of it seems like a distant dream. For days, my son has been lying sedated in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit, covered in tubes.
He is fighting deadly blood cancer. Not just that, he is also suffering from respiratory failure, pneumonia, and liver failure and there is absolutely nothing I can do. Every day, I enter the PICU with the hope of him regaining consciousness, but he doesn’t.
I get goosebumps every time I recall the horrific time that brought a storm that ruined our lives. Back in June, he got a severe fever. We thought it was normal flu and gave him medicines, but his fever didn’t subside for a week.
We then took him to the hospital where she was kept under observation and underwent numerous tests. That’s when he was diagnosed with tuberculosis. His treatment was started immediately, but despite that, his health kept worsening. His stomach started bloating and he’d keep vomiting.
We took him to multiple hospitals to find out the real reason behind his declining health. Finally, after a week, we were told that he is suffering from T-cell leukemia, a rare type of blood cancer.
We were devastated. I couldn’t see my son in such a state. “Please do something to treat him,” I begged to the doctors. My son was immediately admitted to the PICU and his treatment started.
However, his health started deteriorating again. He got pneumonia along with respiratory and liver failure. He is currently undergoing hemodialysis along with chemotherapy and other treatment.
For us, as parents, it is nothing less than a nightmare- seeing our cheerful child suddenly confined to the bed, battling between life and death. We somehow pull ourselves together and try to be strong for our son.
It has been five months since, our child has been suffering immensely and every day, we get only a few minutes to see him. I long to hear his voice. He was so talkative. He’d keep telling me stories about his school and friends, but now, all of it seems like a distant dream.
On the other hand, my husband, Santosh, has been working day in and day out to be able to fund our son’s treatment. He works as a jewelry maker and earns only INR 7000.00. We have lost track of funds we have spent on his treatment for months. We have sold off everything we had and took multiple high-interest loans.
“I can do anything to see my son healthy again. I want to see him jumping and hopping around the house and hear his carefree laugh. I miss him. I’m just waiting for the day when I will be able to take him home- healthy,” he says.
No matter what we do, the harsh truth is that, if we don’t arrange INR 1500000.00 urgently, we won’t be able to save our child. I can’t express in words how devastating it is for a parent to see his child fighting for life and not being able to help him.
I have called everyone for help but the required sum is beyond our means. No matter what we do, we’ll never be able to fund our son’s treatment. He is suffering endlessly and now only you can rescue him. Please contribute to save his life. I’ll forever be grateful.
