The Government of India banned 59 Chinese applications including top social media platforms such as Tik Tok, WeChat and Helo App from the Google Play Store and Apple App Store.
The govt said the applications are engaged in activities “prejudicial to sovereignty and integrity of India, defense of India, the security of the state and public order.” The ban has been imposed under Section 69A of the Information Technology Act read with relevant provisions of the Information Technology (Procedure and Safeguards for Blocking of Access of Information by Public) Rules 2009, it said. TikTok owner Bytedance could suffer loss of $6 billion from India’s ban. As there are almost 120 million users of TikTok in India.
Now TikTok distanced itself from Beijing after India banned 59 Chinese apps in the country, according to a correspondence seen by Reuters.
“I can confirm that the Chinese government has never made a request to us for the TikTok data of Indian users,” Mayer wrote, adding that data for Indian users is stored in servers in Singapore. “If we do ever receive such a request in the future, we would not comply. Source- hindustantimes
