Prof. Hardeep Singh, Head Computer Science and Dean, Academic Affairs of the university was delivering the inaugural address of the One-week Workshop on MOOCs, e-content development and Open Educational resources in the UGC-HRDC of the Guru Nanak Dev University here today. As many as 45 teachers of higher education from a multiplicity of academic disciplines from various nooks and corners of the country are participating in it.
Tracing the history of dissemination of knowledge since times immemorial, he said that quest for knowledge and education forced the people to move thousands of miles from their dwelling in the beginning. But thanks to the innovations from time to time in the human civilization, we had reached that advanced stage, where the knowledge and education is knocking at our doors, he added. The knowledge pertaining to any domain is just a click away from us in the present times, he continued. However, the easy and round the clock accessibility in every corner of the universe is posing new challenges to the teaching fraternity as they have to be always on their toes to augment their expertise, knowledge continuously, he concluded.
Earlier, Prof. Sandeep Sharma, Head, Computer Science Engineering and the Course Coordinator apprised the participants with the curriculum of the workshop. Acquainting them with the various schemes launched by the Ministry of Human Resource Development Government of India like ARPIT, LEAP, NRC, SWAYAM, he exhorted them to derive maximum possible advantages of these projects as they have been conceived and designed to uplift the quality of teaching in the country. Guru Nanak Dev University is the one of the first university the region to have introduced MOOC programme in the curriculum, in which more than five thousand students have enrolled themselves. Launched in 2008 the MOOC programmes have already carved a niche have itself all over the world in all the phases of education, be it school, college, and university, he concluded.
