New Delhi, November 24, 2020: The Special Judge, CBI Cases, Delhi has sentenced R.P.Bhatia, then Special Metropolitan Magistrate, Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), Lajpat Nagar, New Delhi to undergo five years of Simple Imprisonment with a total fine of Rs.75,000/- in a bribery case. This was stated by RK.Gaur Spokesman of the CBI. Gaur said that CBI had registered a case on a complaint. It was alleged that the complainant had a shop in Alaknanda Market, New Delhi which was rented out. It was further alleged that on 10.08.2015, R.P.Bhatia, Special Metropolitan Magistrate visited the said market and an Inspector of MCD who was accompanying him had issued a challan for complainant’s shop with directions to attend before the Court of Special Metropolitan Magistrate, MCD, Lajpat Nagar, New Delhi on 13.08.2015. On the same day, the complainant met the Special Metropolitan Magistrate in his court who allegedly demanded a bribe of Rs.60,000/- for settling the challan. It was also alleged that the demand was again raised when R.P.Bhatia, Special MM, MCD called the complainant on 18.08.2015 in his Court and the bribe was reduced to Rs.25,000/- during negotiations. CBI laid a trap and caught the Special MM caught red-handed while accepting the bribe amount of Rs.25,000/- from the complainant. Searches were conducted on 18.08.2015 at the residential premises of the accused.After a thorough investigation, a charge sheet was filed on 05.10.2015 against the accused in the Court of Special Judge, Patiala House Courts, New Delhi and charges were framed on 23.02.2016.
The Trial Court found the accused guilty and convicted him.
